How can I set the "Fill Color" of a shape to be a Gradient in Final Cut Pro X?

In Final Cut Pro X, I'm creating a "Training Video" style project. I want to add some text to the bottom of the screen with a rectangular background behind the text. So... I did the following...

  1. Enabled the Titles & Generator Sidebar
  2. Expanded Generators
  3. Selected Elements
  4. Drug the Shapes generator onto my timeline
  5. In the Inspector, I changed it to rectangle, scaled and positioned it where I want it.
  6. Deselected the checkbox for Outline to get rid of it.

I see that there is a Fill Color area where I can change the color of the rectangle. However, there does not appear to be any way to change the fill of the shape to a gradient. I do not want a solid rectangle. I want it to be a 3-color gradient to match the corporate style guide of the client. In this Apple Community article, it clearly says...

"You can use the gradient controls to create gradients in titles and generators."

...and then it goes on to give instructions on how. However, all of the options it shows, says,

"Click the Gradient disclosure triangle to show the gradient editor."

There is no "Gradient disclosure triangle" to be found. I must be missing something about what a "Generator" is. I used to use Final Cut Pro well over a decade ago, so it has changed a lot, and I have forgotten even more. In my mind, if the knowledgebase article says I can create gradients within a "Generator" and then I add a shape to my timeline, which appears to be within the category of Generator, where is the Gradient feature for shapes?

Available options depend on which generator you use.

You will only see the choice of a gradient if that is published from Motion.

Now if you have Motion, it is actually not difficult to Open a copy in Motion and publish the desired parameters.

I do not have Motion. Am I crazy, or is it not a little strange that Apple would have a Pro-level app like Final Cut Pro X that won't even let you add a gradient to a simple rectangle shape, without buying a second app (Motion)? I would be incredibly appreciative if you can furnish me with something that will let me create a rectangle with a gradient in Final Cut Pro X.

Here is a very simple generator, done in about two minutes. It lacks onscreen controls, but it does have a gradient fill :-)

It also lacks an installer, so you have to manually place in the correct location using the Finder:

Expand the zip file and place the whole folder "Rectangle" in some "category" folder (call it Lichinho like in the picture below, or whatever you want).

Download the generator:

Place it like this:

Give this a try (it's free, currently):

https://fcpxtemplates.com/utility-gradient/

(Installation instructions available from the download page, at the bottom).

It's an effect which means once you set up the design you want, you can save it as an Effect Preset (which looks just like any other effect inside FCPX). That includes whatever gradient design you come up with (because who needs to keep reworking the original gradient - every - time - you - use - it!!!)

It has the full Gradient designer control available. You can apply as many colors as you need and have a gradient opacity applied as well (with as many "stops" as you need).

The onscreen control is a little annoying because whenever it's active, it lightens the entire shape. Other than that, it's really useful. You can resize, reposition and change the angle of the gradient with it.

The gradient has blend modes available. The default is Overlay. If you apply this effect to a Title, the gradient will look like it's behind the text automatically without any further interaction. You may also find the Behind blend mode to be very useful if you're using more than one effect at a time -- you can layer several gradient (or other) effects with it.

If you apply the gradient to a Title (with no background, like Basic Title) you can use the Fill Text option to apply the gradient to only the text, with the blend mode!

You can apply the gradient to masked areas of your clip (use the Effects Masks options like Color Mask and Shape Masks). For example, you can apply a gradient fill to the Shape generator: add a Color Mask, click the eyedropper on the solid white area, change the Blend Mode to Normal.

If you have any questions... just ask.
