Time Machine encryption time

I have a new new imac with sshd and the new T2 chip and about 1tb data and a 5tb external. I chose encrypt for the time machine. Here it is almost a month later and it says 88% or so encrypted. I enter the enter time machine and it is real slow to choose a file from a week or so ago.

-Over a month to encrypt the drive?? is this OK?

-Will time machine retrieval speed up after encryption is done finally?

-I don't necessarily need encrypt but I read that w/the T2 chip it is almost transparent... maybe I should not encrypt...

Yes. Encryption takes a long time and 5 TB is large. Let it finish.

Yes.

An unencrypted Time Machine backup can be used to effectively create an exact duplicate of the Mac being backed up. Keep that in mind if that external hard disk drive should become lost, stolen, or its enclosure decides to stop working.
