I have an iPad Pro 2020 and do a lot of photo imports with an SD card reader. In Photos, I always get an Import icon on the bottom of the screen when I insert the reader. Since IOS 14 was installed, I no longer get that or anything else that opens up. I did activate the sidebar, and was able to import by checking the Device selection. The Import option there did nothing. I can find nothing about this anywhere. Is this the new normal?

After speaking with Support, the workflow that ending up doing the trick for me was:
1) Open Files app and navigate to images on the SD (or external HD).
2) Select the images I'm looking to add to the Photos app.
3) Tap Share.
4) Tap Save (#) Images (appears beneath Copy and above Print.
5) Open Photos.
Under which app will be “Devices” submenu? In “Files” app i only have “Locations”, “Favorites@ and “Tags”. No any sign of “Devices” after sd reader with card is inserted. Also tried on Photos ... Same behavior on both devices.0
Glad it worked, and glad I could help. It makes sense, once you figure it out, and is now much more like the work flow on the Mac.
My only real complaint is about any lack of guidance on this significant change in Photos. I have yet to see any mention of the new import protocols mentioned by either Apple or any of the countless IOS 14 guides put out by everyone else. Are they simply unaware of the change? I called Apple, and no one there had a clue. There are tons of questions about this from users all over the world ... all of them confused.
I have a n IPhone XR and it stopped working to since the last update I can’t import pictures from my trail cameras at all now now import option and I tried my wife’s phone which is the same as mine and hers is the same way I called Apple support and they had no idea how to fix it and knew nothing about the situation. Any help from anyone?
Seriously apple is not doing anything about it? It was fine until I get the last beta update, now the card is recognised, I can see the folders but not images, I bought this ipad to not have any problems with my workflow and now I'm selling it after seeing comments here people complaining days after days.
I have the same kind of problem. I've tried a couple of different readers and connecting strait.to the camera.
No device shows up in photos side bar.
I also get the message 'unlock iPad to use accessories' intermittently popping up and instantly disappearing.
I tried switching on the option to allow the use of accessories while the iPad is locked and the message still appears.
Problem since ios14.
Can someone explain what's the side bar i use Lightning to SD Card Camera Reader and as soon as i updated the IOS to 14.4 i lost the import option and not sure how to get my photos into my Ipad.
It was working fine before this IOS update
