I have a Mac from 2008 stored away I’m my closet. Can I take in to Apple and upgrade

Sure! They might be able to recycle it for you when you buy a new one. Call them first to see if they can accept computers for recycling at that particular store.

Apple won't work on computers older than about five years. What is it you want upgraded? RAM? Operating system? Storage?
