Apple Watch not Updating

I just got a Series 1 Apple Watch from a friend. She deleted it from her Apple account and it’s ready to be paired. When I try to pair and update it VIA app, it says the update cannot be completed and that there is an error. I cannot use the watch until it is updated. What’s wrong? Both are charged, the phone has Bluetooth on and is connected on WiFi.

Can’t pair or update Apple Watch. I reset my Apple Watch series 5 several times now. When I try to pair it says it needs to update, it start to update and then suddenly appears a message for less than a second and can’t update, and then it says unpairing Apple Watch, and start over. I try reset over and over again. iPhone too. Still not working. Please help!

If the Apple Watch Series 1 is being updated to watchOS 6 (if supported) then you will need a newer phone.
