Apple Watch not Updating

I just got a Series 1 Apple Watch from a friend. She deleted it from her Apple account and it’s ready to be paired. When I try to pair and update it VIA app, it says the update cannot be completed and that there is an error. I cannot use the watch until it is updated. What’s wrong? Both are charged, the phone has Bluetooth on and is connected on WiFi.
