I am trying to connect my Mac Pro 6,1 to a 49" Samsung C49RG9x monitor. I get a good connection with the HDMI input but HDMI will not go to 5120x1440p resolution. When I try to connect the thunderbolt to DisplayPort I can set it to that resolution but the screen is somewhat scrambled (Pixelate?), enlarged, and extends beyond the screen. Suggestions?

Macs often have problems with ultra-wide (5120x1440) displays. Try using Picture-By-Picture mode.
Connect it with two Mini DisplayPort to DisplayPort cables from different Thunderbolt busses.
Enable "Displays have separate spaces" in Mission Control" system preference.
Drag the displays sided-by-side in. the Arrangement tab of Displays system preference.
You should then be able to use it as one ultra-wide display.

A little confused. Are you saying I am going to have to run two cables? Connecting to 2 thunderbolt ports into computer and two display ports into the monitor? Or is one cable into one thunderbolt in the computer to one display port sufficient? I did the one cable option and it did not work.
Two Mini DisplayPort to DisplayPort cables, no HDMI. In the monitor, set Picture-By-Picture mode.
The Mac will see it as two 2560 x 1440 displays, but with the Separate Spaces and Arrangement settings, it work as one 5120 x 1440 display.
That display claims two [Full Size] DisplayPort inputs. A simple MiniDisplayPort to DisplayPort cable should do the job for connecting.
The thunderBolt ports are on three busses, and you may need to move that display to its own Bus:
