Simple watch face, can’t add date to face

For some reason I can not add the date to the Simple Watch Face though it was there before.

When I select “middle bottom” complication on Simple Watch face, neither the watch or phone will allow me to uncheck “off” to add the date. This is a very useful feature and I’m frustrated that I cannot add it back.
