Adding gmail to home screen

I presume you refer to the Gmail App?

Simply download the Gmail App from the Apple App Store, then drag the App icon to whichever Home Screen you choose.

It sounds like you need to download the Gmail App. Click on the App Store -> Search -> Gmail. Click get, and enter your Apple ID password or touch ID. It should start to download and appear on your Home Screen.
