Apple Watch independence myth?

It was my impression from the Watch 6 launch that we were told that with the latest OS the Apple Watch could be independent from the iPhone, as in, you could own a Apple Watch without having an iPhone. Reading the fine print here, it seems that's not true

You are apparently confusing the new "Family" feature where a parent can add a child's Apple Watch to the Parent's iPhone and to the iPhone family cellular plan. Substitute elderly for child if that is the desire.

An iPhone is still needed, but now, it can be 1 iPhone and several Apple Watches all managed from the iPhone. The carriers will give the family memory separate phone numbers, and of course either include the cost of the additional lines in the Family plan pricing.
