Can the Apple Watch be used as a standalone device?

Can I use Apple Watch even if I don't currently have an iPhone? [P.S. I have a very old iPhone 7, it's almost like I don't have it) but I have a Macbook and an iPad. But if I don't have another Apple product, does it make sense to have the Watch on its own? Should I use it as a standalone device? Please give me a detailed answer if you can.

In brief...

You MUST have an iPhone. Apple Watch requires an iPhone to pair, setup and work. Without it you can't even do the initial setup, the watch will be unusable. For a new iPhone you need iOS 17 on the iPhone, which means at least iPhone Xs.
