Samsung T5 keeps disconnecting from MBP

I have this 500 GB external drive connected via one of the USB (MBP A1398 macbookpro11,3 mid2014) which has been working well for the last 2 yr but now the device is disconnecting too often - the drive disappears from finder. The issue is particularly irritating as I store 2 parallels VMs and it appears whenever large amount of data is read or written to the drive.

Also noticed the MB battery has bulged, it appears swollen to a point where the touchpad is not operative and the laptop does not even sit steady on my desk - got a OWC replacement already.

I’ve managed to tame the situation via an SMC reset.

Any others experiencing the same situation?

Use Disk Utility First Aid to check the file system on the external drive.


Disconnect all other external devices from the laptop.


Connect the external drive directly to the laptop. Make sure to try the USB port on the other side of the laptop as well.


Try using another USB cable.


Try using a good powered USB3 hub to connect the external drive. Sometimes a powered hub can supply a bit more power to the drive and the hub can act as a filter & buffer. A cheap hub will usually cause more problems.


If you haven't rebooted the laptop in a while, then reboot the laptop.


Are you using the Samsung proprietary software to manage the drive or do you have macOS managing the external drive (originally set up by using Disk Utility to erase the drive for use on a Mac)? If you are using the Samsung proprietary software make sure that software is up to date.


Do you have any anti-virus apps, or third party security or cleaning apps installed which may be interfering with the drive? You can run EtreCheck to look for possible software issues and posting the report here using the "Additional Text" icon which looks like a piece of paper.
