Cannot login to my user profile on Macbook Pro after laptop froze

Does anyone know how to solve this problem - I went away from my desktop for about ten minutes and when I came back the screen had completely frozen. I turned the laptop off and restarted but now it only comes up with an old - no longer in use - admin profile or guest, not the admin profile I have been using for the past four years or so. Previously when this has happened on occasion I am able to log in to the guest, then log out and my profile shows up. But not this time. No matter what I have tried I cannot get into the laptop on my current profile.

I then tried going to disk utility and first aid, but this message comes up:

First Aid could not unmount the volume for repair

I am at a total loss.

@MirandaGQ

I would boot into Safe Mode first, and see if you can get into the Finder.

If you can boot into Safe Mode, run Disk Utility and repair the disk.

If you see any error messages, note them down.

However, if you cannot boot into Safe Mode, reset both the NVRAM and SMC.

After you have reset the NVRAM and SMC, see if you can get into Safe Mode again, and repair the disk.

If none of the above work, it may be time to contact Apple Support.

Can you log into the old user account or was this old user account deleted?

I've seen a macOS bug where the most recently created user account will "disappear". The only way to "fix" the issue is by creating another user account so the "missing" account is not the last one created. This makes the "missing" account re-appear. You will need to keep this new user account until Apple fixes the macOS bug. Your other option would be to restore from a backup made before this issue occurred.
