storage on external HD

as the opening of my imac on imovie is other slow, same when downloading photos, I wish to store my own movies/clips and Photos on an external disk. How to do it? or any other suggestions than iCloud (not so safe?) I'mon Catalina. my imac is version/year built 2013.

You can move Photos, Movies, iTunes and pretty much anything else off to an external drive.

However I do not recommend moving anything off to an external drive, until you have additional backups on at least 1 or more external drive to be safe.


Plus keep in mind that opening your Photos, Movies, iTunes Libraries on an external drive can actually take longer to open than opening from the internal drive.
