Apple Watch SE

Hi,

I want to purchase an apple watch SE but I don't use and iPhone as my regular phone (I have a Samsung Note 8). I do however have an old iPhone 6s.

Could I use the 6s to set up the watch and then use the watch independently from the phone or do the watches need to connect with the phones on a regular basis?

I only really want to use the watch for fitness tracking and music. Not bothered about sms or calls...

Many thanks

Ed

The 6s running iOS 14 will work. Make absolutely sure it is a 6s, because the 6 and 6 Plus WILL NOT WORK.

I would upgrade the 6s to iOS 14 first. If you can do that, you do have a 6s, because the 6 and 6 Plus are stuck on iOS 12 and cannot go any further.

The Apple Watch shares the iPhone's phone number, and the cellular carriers that support the Apple Watch charge a monthly fee for this service. In the U.S. the fee is $10 per month added to the iPhone bill.

Carriers that support the Apple Watch.

In addition, if you do SMS/MMS texting, that always go through the iPhone, so the iPhone has to be powered up and connected to the Internet. It can be sitting in your home on WiFi, or Cellular, but the Apple Watch must be able to find the iPhone to do any SMS/MMS texting.

Other messaging services such as iMessage, WhatsApp, etc... are all data based, and the LTE Data service and VoIP that the Apple Watch uses will work just fine.
