Orange dot - listening to iPhone calls?

Hi,

I’ve read the orange dot means an app is using the microphone. It appeared when making a phone call. I’ve turned off the microphone for all apps and I don’t have Siri turned on. The orange dot still appears when making a phone call. Does this mean someone is listening to my phone calls?

thanks

Hey there, LT012.

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities! Thanks for posting about the new notification that you're seeing when using an app that uses the microphone. We'd be glad to help you out.

You mentioned that you turned off the microphone for all apps in the list in Settings > Privacy > Microphone. One app that you likely won't see in that list is the Phone app, which is what you use when handling normal phone calls on an iPhone, so you're seeing the orange light because the Phone app is using your microphone while you talk on the phone. This is expected.

More info about this new feature are available in the "Review or change access to the camera, microphone, and other hardware features" section of Control access to hardware features on iPhone.

Okay! Now I’m really concerned. While texting back and forth just now on iMessage, the usual sounds of texting were not sounding. So I looked at the phone to see what could be happening. Maybe it was still connected to my Bluetooth speaker though I had it off, and low and behold, the orange dot was there! Someone tell me why the orange dot, why my microphone would be on during texting? I checked to see what apps were open and nothing that would’ve used my microphone. Totally weird!

It happened two times while I was texting and the second time I looked and saw the orange dot and it went away before I could tap it to see what app was using it. I do have dictation enabled. I don’t remember ever enabling it, so I imagine it’s been that way for a while, dictation uses your microphone? I checked to see what apps are using my mic and it’s very few. I had disabled using my mic on many apps a while ago. Any other ideas of why this would happen while texting? I did hear about a security issue Apple is having and that we should upgrade to iOS 14.4 for the fixes. Maybe related to that?

I have been having same trouble orange light Only appears when I’m making or receiving phone calls, ive turned off all microphones related to phone & apps. And it’s still there, I think it appeared after my friend downloaded an app to my phone, ive removed app but still there. So if not recording my calls why only lights up when I’m on a call?
