Orange dot - listening to iPhone calls?

Hi,

I’ve read the orange dot means an app is using the microphone. It appeared when making a phone call. I’ve turned off the microphone for all apps and I don’t have Siri turned on. The orange dot still appears when making a phone call. Does this mean someone is listening to my phone calls?

thanks

Hey there, LT012.

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities! Thanks for posting about the new notification that you're seeing when using an app that uses the microphone. We'd be glad to help you out.

You mentioned that you turned off the microphone for all apps in the list in Settings > Privacy > Microphone. One app that you likely won't see in that list is the Phone app, which is what you use when handling normal phone calls on an iPhone, so you're seeing the orange light because the Phone app is using your microphone while you talk on the phone. This is expected.

More info about this new feature are available in the "Review or change access to the camera, microphone, and other hardware features" section of Control access to hardware features on iPhone.

Let us know if you need anything else.

Be well.

I m really concerned about the answer you provided to an inquiry about the orange dot that appears when on a call. In simple terms, how does one stops the orange dot, and whatever is associated with it in the background from doing whatever it is it’s doing? Is this associated to some agorithm that attempts to pick key words on conversations for monitoring purposes of some sort?

What part of “The orange dot means that the microphone is on” don’t you understand?

Neither did I but it’s because they do listen. Turn whatever you want off. It doesn’t matter. Everything you say, record, send, receive...is recorded. It is sold to companies and employers. This IS our reality.
Seriously, that's the silliest thing I've heard all day.

Give the day time. It's not over yet........

My phone was having an issue with a microphone icon over my signal bar upper left corner every time I’d unlock my phone and start using apps or searching the web now no matter what calling app or actual phone call I use the orange dot appears!

Oh My Dear Lord.........Read the thread. YOU ARE NOT BEING RECORDED and your Racist rant was completely unnaceptable, hence why the Forum Host removed the inflammatory comment altogether.

Ok, I have read the full thread here and although in many instances, I found it quite comical the amount of times the same thing had to be repeated. I do completely understand why Apple are using the orange/green dots to indicate to the users that either their mic and/or camera are being used by an app on their device.

So it is actually a very useful tool with regards to protecting ones privacy.... I do get that!

The issue I have now, is that when I’m either making or receiving calls....yes the orange dot appears on my device, but the person on the other end of the phone can either not hear me at all, or at best on some occasions, can just hear me very faintly, like a muffled sound.

Now I’ve tested all 3 mics on my phone by taking short videos, with sound, viewed from both the back and the front of my device....this tests the front and back mics. I then done a voice memo to test the lower mic.

All of the mics on my device work absolutely fine, yet as I said when I make/receive a call, the person on the opposite end cannot hear me.

I initially thought it may have been a software problem, but not everyone has experienced a similar issue.

Could it potentially be a bug or does anyone have any suggestions as to what I can try to sort this out???

Before anyone asks....yes, the volume was up and the mute button wasn’t on. I also disabled all apps from having access to my mics.

It just seems to be ever since the orange dot appeared with the latest update, that I’ve been experiencing this problem. Cheers!

Apologies for the delayed response. For whatever reason that I can’t explain, my sound seems to be working again as normal when making/receiving calls.

I haven’t done anything other than what I had previously mentioned and now it’s working all of a sudden.

FYI... It’s only an iPhone7 I have and my phone had already been updated to iOS 14.3.

My case is still on as well, so I’m left puzzled as to what may have been the problem. There were no obvious obstructions present either.

I appreciate your correspondence in an attempt to help me out with this....much appreciated Lawrence. Cheers!
