Orange dot - listening to iPhone calls?

When someone calls me and I answer the call, the orange dot appears WHEN I ANSWER THE CALL. The microphone is not in use until I answer the call.

In regards to what you reported, many iPhone 7 devices have experienced problems with the internal circuitry and have experienced audio issues. Many people have reported there is a cold solder joint that can affect the mic and software updates can manifest this problem. I'm glad yours is working now, but it can fail at any point. It might be a good idea to see about replacing your phone with a newer model. This issue with the reported internal circuit board is not covered.

Try removing the case completely, and try with noise cancellation both on and off.

ALSO: Do you have an iPhone 12? Make sure it is updated to iOS 14.3.

Because the mic is on. Don’t worry - a light can’t record anything.

It never came on until you updated to iOS 14. And it has been on for every phone call you have made since updating to iOS 14, whether you noticed it or not.

So what if I have my microphone turned off an all apps, and it is my iPad that keeps showing the orange dot? I don’t use SIRI and my iPad can’t make calls, so I’m unsure how I can figure out what I can turn off to stop this. I am sure my iPad does listen to conversations in the room, as I get ads targeted to things I’ve talked about and not searched. FB is one place I see the ads, but FB isn’t even listed on the microphone page.

i believe these are two different things. What you talk into being received by the person your talking to in a conversation is not the same as your microphone recording a call. The orange dot means the microphone is recording, not listening. Making phone calls does not require a microphone recording.

So, you feel they are now are informing you they are recording your conversations?

I wonder if they have been recording your conversations all along. And if so, I wonder why they have now chosen to let you know they are recording.

I've no apps open and haven't made a phone call for around 5 hours but there is still an orange dot on my phone... when I open the control screen, it says 'phone' but my phone app is definitely not in use. Any ideas???

I’ve reviewed your reply and understand: the microphone is on during normal phone call usage i.e. the orange dot is illuminated.

The question not being answered is: during normal phone call usage where the orange light is on: ARE CALLS EVER BEING RECORDED OR MONITORED?

Ok so, I have to watch the orange dot the whole time to know the person can hear/still hear me while focusing on my call? That means I’d only be able to use speaker phone so that I can watch the “dot” the entire duration of said phone call. Or..... I could just keep asking the person on the other end “can you hear me now.” Is this what the world has come to that we must rely on an orange dot to tell us whether the person on the other end of the line can hear us or not? I think I’m smart enough to be able to know whether the person on the other end can hear me.

I m really concerned about the answer you provided to an inquiry about the orange dot that appears when on a call. In simple terms, how does one stops the orange dot, and whatever is associated with it in the background from doing whatever it is it’s doing? Is this associated to some agorithm that attempts to pick key words on conversations for monitoring purposes of some sort?

To stop the orange dot from appearing, simply stop using any app that uses the microphone. This is quite easy to do if you never need to use Siri, make a phone call, receive a phone call, create a voice memo, etc.
