Orange dot - listening to iPhone calls?

Hi,

I’ve read the orange dot means an app is using the microphone. It appeared when making a phone call. I’ve turned off the microphone for all apps and I don’t have Siri turned on. The orange dot still appears when making a phone call. Does this mean someone is listening to my phone calls?

thanks

Hey there, LT012.

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities! Thanks for posting about the new notification that you're seeing when using an app that uses the microphone. We'd be glad to help you out.

You mentioned that you turned off the microphone for all apps in the list in Settings > Privacy > Microphone. One app that you likely won't see in that list is the Phone app, which is what you use when handling normal phone calls on an iPhone, so you're seeing the orange light because the Phone app is using your microphone while you talk on the phone. This is expected.

More info about this new feature are available in the "Review or change access to the camera, microphone, and other hardware features" section of Control access to hardware features on iPhone.

Let us know if you need anything else.

Be well.

I don't understand what the fuss is about a simple light indication that your microphone is in use? Would you rather NOT know your microphone is being used? That seems far less preferential. The indicator is doing NOTHING more than letting you know your microphone is being used. And it will ONLY be used when you use an app which needs the microphone.

The way to stop the dot is to NEVER use any app which requires you to use the microphone on your phone. This means never making a phone call. Never using FaceTime. Never using WhatsApp or ANY app which needs the microphone.

You CANNTO turn off the indicator. Period.

You can think what you wish, but you would be interested to know that Apple is much more protective of your privacy that Blackberry was/is. If you used a Blackberry, you gave them unlimited access to your email account so they could deliver your mail to your device. At least with the iPhone, your account is on the device, not on Apple's servers. They are not listening, it is a way for you to understand when your microphone is live. If you are not on the phone, if you see the orange dot, you know some other app is using the mic. If you are not using anything that should be using the mic, then you can swipe down Control Center and see what it is. No one is listening or recording.

First of all, they are not answering a simple question. Second, it actually says that the orange dot is an app using your microphone to record. Third, apple support said, "One app that you likely WON"T see in that list is the Phone app, which

is what you use when handling normal phone calls on an iPhone, so you're seeing the orange light because the Phone app is using your microphone while you talk on the phone. This is expected." There you go!! we cant see iphone phone app is actuallly using the app why cant we see that????? this is where i think they are corrupt but hey they r not the only thing corrupt in the US. no one does anything so they will keep doing it.. we cant make or break them so they dont give a rats ***.

I didn’t see you answer the question. Is Apple now recording or listening to our phone calls and is that why the orange dot now on when I make a phone call

No. Why would you think Apple would be so silly as to show an orange indicator if they were recording your conversation? If they wanted to record your conversations, they have 100% control of the software, meaning YOU would not know if they were recording.

it's really quite simple and logical.

Your phone has a microphone and cameras. These are things that could be used to compromise one's privacy right?

You have apps that you give permission to access your microphone and your camera(s) when you first install and open them.

Once you give an app permission to listen or watch, how do you really know when it is doing so?

Well Apple has provided you with 2 indicators so that you know when your microphone and/or camera(s) are being used. If this is at an unexpected time, you can figure out which app is doing this and do something about it.

Why people insist on thinking there is some scheme or conspiracy is ridiculous.

I absolutely agree....The microphone recording has nothing to do with making phone calls. Are incoming as well as outgoing phone calls being recorded? It’s a simple yes or no answer that I would appreciate from Apple....Don’t get me wrong, I am not naive to the fact that this HAS been happening BEFORE the orange dot...I’ve always suspected...Especially when adds pop up concerning the very topic being discussed shortly after having a conversation with someone...As well as being able to be watched through the camera...lol I’ve always been “that person” whose put tape over ANY lens...even on our computer...These very conversations are the reasons why...After this latest feature being installed (which I truly do appreciate having) I would think Apple would have been prepared to answer these questions...After all, they are the ones who “want to protect our privacy”...Or is that from everyone else BUT them?

Sure. If you want to create false reasons to be concerned, you should definitely constantly stare at the orange dot. The rest of us will just see the microphone is in use and have our phone conversation without worrying.

I have to give it to you to have created the funniest reason to be all upset about an icon which does NOTHING other than tell you the microphone is being used!

The paranoia about such a harmless icon is amusing and sad at the same time.

Neither did I but it’s because they do listen. Turn whatever you want off. It doesn’t matter. Everything you say, record, send, receive...is recorded. It is sold to companies and employers. This IS our reality.

Here is Apple’s privacy statement, which refutes what you posted ➡️ https://www.apple.com/privacy/

If you believe Apple is LYING in their privacy statement you should immediately get rid of all of your Apple products, and probably contact a lawyer.

But think about it: If Apple really is spying on you, why would they add a clear signal that they were? Why wouldn’t they keep it secret?

I’m older. In thinking about using a good old fashion telephone, not even going way back, but even cordless phones, didn’t we have a mouth piece that we spoke into, a microphone so to speak? We also had an ear piece so we can hear what the person on the other end is saying. So the orange dot, I’ve read means that it is recording, some forums are saying that it’s just to let us know our microphone is on. Why do we need that? Are we going to have another dot to let us know it’s listening. This doesn’t make sense. Here’s what I think, Apple is listening and recording, the dot is there so they can claim transparency, and we must’ve agreed to it in the terms when we updated. Who really reads the terms right. Is it stopping me from using my iPhone, no, but I am consider becoming a crackberry again. Then again I’m sure Apple isn’t really interested in me.

Most here are specifically talking about the orange dot when your on a call,

So please explain how you can be "on a call" (your words) and not be using the mic?

We'll wait.

Most here are not listening to the explanation being given.

Most here are letting their paranoia about being recorded interfere with paying attention to the answer being provided

Orange dot or not, we all run the risk of being recorded by the party at the other of the phone call without our knowledge or permission.

Every call. Every type of phone. Flip Phones. Rotary Phones. All phones.
