Homepod sound suddenly tinny

Hello, just started playing music on my Homepod and the sound is like that of an old transistor radio. I have restarted and completely reset the Homepod. I also removed it from the power and changed rooms in an effort to force recalibration.

The volume is never loud, always gentle background, so there's no way that a component has "blown". Any ideas?

I logged a Case with Apple Care and was advised to take the HomePod to a local Apple authorised repair centre in New Zealand. The Homepod was assessed and then I was advised that because it was purchased in Australia, they were unable to service the device. I called Apple Care again and was advised that the only option I have is to take the device to Australia, Hong Kong, Japan or China, then call Apple Care again and organise for the device to be shipped to the Apple service centre. I offered to ship the item myself directly but was told this could not be done. Instead, I will have to ship the device to a friend or family and then they will have to contact Apple to organise shipment. Once the device is repaired, I will then have to organise for the device to be sent on to me in New Zealand.

Totally unacceptable! The Apple Care rep could not escalate the issue.
