For iPhone 7's that have a loose Audio IC not even iOS 25.x is going to fix it. If your speaker is grayed out and all you can do is use BT, as you have described, it is a hardware problem. It is not caused by any update, although doing one can reveal it and your really have 3 options: (a) Pay Apple for an out-of-warranty replacement and get a service replacement unit. I would not go that route at this point when you can buy a new iPhone SE 2020 for less than $100 more, (b) buy some other phone or (c) find a 3rd party repair shop that can do microlevel soldering and have them re-ball the four connection points that are usually at issue, and do ask and make sure they did all four. Prices have been dropping for this option. Keep in mind if you go this route Apple may refuse future service on your iPhone, but that really should not be an issue.

I’m being transparent. As I said if you do a search you will find people who had the issue (and not just a few) when they had not done any update. And I’ve watched someone do the repair by re-balling 4 connections where it comes loose.

But as I said for people who have the Audio IC problem the speakerphone also doesn’t work. So find a 3rd party repair shop that can do board level soldering and have them look at it.

I have the same issue on my iphone 7, i also update my Iphone 5(SE) to ios 14.4, this one no issue at all.

After some tweaking i finally concluded that IT IS IOS an 14 BUG !

How DO I KNOW THIS?

because after i reset all data and setting mic is working. but then after several apps install (WHATSAPP etc) mic doesnt work again.

DO THIS : Each time your mic or speaker doesn't work, try to go to SETTING, ACCESSIBILITY, VOICE CONTROL. Turn VOICE CONTROL to ON, wait for a few second, then it will prompt on top of your screen "microphone is being used by another application, voice control will be turn off".

After you "reset all setting", then microphone will work again.

Or RESET ALL DATA and SETTING (FACTORY RESET = means you lose all your data on phone)

IT IS DEFINITELY an IOS 14 BUG !!

APPLE , PLEASE BE A GOOD CORPORATE AND FIX THIS FFS !!

You are so close on the test part, the update does do that and if the test fails then the IC will no longer function. It doesn't cause the failure it reports it. And as far as the details there is no way software can cause a physical break of a solder point on a logic board. So if you took your iPhone to a 3rd party shop and they re-balled the 4 connection points (make sure they did 4) then that was a hardware problem that made itself manifest after the update. There are many other posts regarding the same failure, and the same remedy, but it did not occur during an update.

I am facing the same problem after updating to ios14.4.1. I did factory reset and it doesn’t help either.

brought down to Apple center and the advisor mentioned that the call chip was disabled and the only solution is to replace a new one!

so angry that this problem is not caused by myself but iOS update and yet they mentioned my iPhone 7 is out of warranty.

why would Apple release the iOS 14 when there is bug on iPhone 7 and still allow iPhone 7 to be able to update to ios14?

Did Apple did a thorough regression testing on older phones before releasing ios14?

after having followed this thread for some time, i decided to check with a local repair shop. they claimed that they could fix this issue by replacing the chip. so i had a try. actually it was successful! they fixed it for only 120 bucks (here in Switzerland). so probably the malfunction was just a coincidence with the iOS update.

but still there is some strange behaviour. when making video with the front-camera the sound is all noisy, while i get a crystal clear sound when using facetime... i don't get it, but fortunately this is an application that i hardly ever need.

You do know this is a user to user technical support site operated by Apple and that no Apple execs or agents are here?

If you have a loose Audio IC on your iPhone 7 that is why it isn't working and your 5s is as it doesn't have the same issue. You can have your iPhone tested to see if it is a hardware problem. If your speakerphone is grayed out that is a good clue. If not contact apple support and give them your information. This isn't happening to all iPhone 7 series phones so they would have to determine why it is happening to yours but not others.

I had an iPhone 7 Plus with this problem. I could lightly slap it in the palm of my hand and it would work for a while. Sometimes I could just pick it up put it down then pick it up again and it would work for a short while.

If you think it is a software issue with your phone contact Apple Support, give them your information and volunteer to put a profile on your iPhone to diagnosis it. Or find a competent 3rd party shop that can do microsoldering and have them check it. They can explain what is happening and fix it for about $145 USD. Apple may not provide future service to your iPhone if you go this route.

I'm able to fix the problem by restoring the last firmware, but only for a short time.

Everything start again to work at the beginning for some tens of minutes at the maximum (this means that the problem is not hardware but is a bug of the last software release).

Then I lose the speakers, the microphone and the camera (the camera fails with the apple application, but it works with third party apps).

Then the camera and the speakers recover after many minutes/hours.

The mic does not recover and during a call also the speakers are not usable (although they work in other applications).

The phone application fails to make a call even with the WORKING wired headphones (again it proves that the problem is not hardware but software): it only woks via Bluetooth devices or via CarPlay.

This behaviour is reproducible by restoring the last firmware.

It is not acceptable that a new software release compatible with a specific device (iPhone 7 in my case) breaks it.

Apple, please solve the problem.

Please give me the details of the many scenarios where you have seen this happen. And that is not the way ICs and logic boards work, you cannot solder one pin to a different connector, the are rigid, they don't move.

There are many reports here of people who have run into the same problem when they had not updated their software. My older 7 Plus that I passed down failed not even close to an update.

I have doubt that people's ICs don't show a problem after an update. Not because of the connector but because installation it does not get a proper response from the IC. After it is re-balled the OS can connect and get a proper response.

If you actually have a competent 3rd party shop near you go buy and have them show you which connections are the problem and how they repair it.

So I wanted to reach out to this community and give you all an update, since my last post was a scathing message about this issue and Apple not taking responsibility. Since then, I attempted to make one more phone call to Apple (after about 6 previous calls...and during one of those previous 6, I was on the phone for over three hours). On the 7th, and final attempt, I called to say that my wife needed a new phone, and if Apple is not willing to fix this issue, which is definitely not a user created one, then will they at least provide a discount on a new phone. I got super lucky, and ended up speaking with a Rep. that was willing to write up the issue and get approval to issue my wife a new iPhone 7 Plus on their dime. It’s terrible that I had to call 7 times and spend hours upon hours explaining the same issue over and over again, but making that 7th call was worth it. I had to place some money on hold (around $500) until the phone with the mic issue was returned to Apple, but once they received it (in the box that they sent the new iPhone in) they released the hold, and my wife’s phone works again.

The previous version of iOS is somehow more tolerant to this intermitten hardware problem. As it is intermitten, some conclude it by claiming it is not a problem caused by iOS update as it may not happen immediately after the update, and insisting us to pay some hardware "fixing" or buying a new iphone to fix it. While it may could be fixed by Apple incorporating that more-tolerant code of the previous software for free.

To show that it is not necessarily a hardware problem, you could try that when the problem happens, just put the iphone on the table so it is free from any possible pressures to the front face of the iphone's body, try to call one more time to ensure the problem still happens, then by still letting the iphone on the table, restart the iphone, and see that the problem is gone away after the restart. If it is a hardware problem that cannot be fixed by the software -- the problem would not just go away by restarting the iphone.

Also when it happens, sometimes the camera apps won't work -- you click the taking-picture button but the camera doesn't take picture. Open WhatsApp app and try to take picture directly from the app -- the camera works just fine. So again, whatever it is, it is not a problem that cannot be fixed by the software.

We can't know for sure though -- so the real problem here is a caring company should give a formal explantion as it is affecting so many users. Just don't expect too much from this company.
