Can Apple support ask you to share your screen when you call them?

Hello,

from the Apple support website, i requested a phone call. I was told it would take around 2 minutes for a representative to call me back.

Less than 1 minute later, i was called by the phone number on the website ...

The operator guided me through several steps I could use to fix the issues. I wasn’t seeing or getting the options they were expecting me to have on my screen. So i would try to describe what shows up (or not) on my screen with each step. None of their options worked, so a minute or so later, they asked to see my screen so they can guide me better.

Once they were able to share the screen, they guided me through several sets of steps. after 15-20 minutes (because the phone had to be restarted and the watch reset and paired again), the issues were finally fixed. Throughout the screen sharing time, i was asked to go to “Bluetooth” in settings and also “About”, “software update” on the watch app on my phone.

i know it is a little too late to worry about a scam/hack, but i am concerned now because i have never heard of such method to fix issues. Is screen sharing with an Apple operator a thing?

Thank you.

Yes, they've done that a couple of times for me. The obvious difference is scammers will try and get you to download TeamViewer or LogMeIn to access your desktop. Apple has their own remote access protocol built right into the OS, which they guide you through to connect with them.
