Photos Duplicating, Triplicating, etc. on Import New

Every time I synch my phone and select "Import All New Items" in the Photos app, all of the photos on my phone download, even if they have downloaded before. The result is brand new photos are there once. Photos that were downloaded the previous time are there twice. Photos that were downloaded two times ago are there 3 times. Photos that were downloaded three times ago are there 4 times. And so on. I have some photos that are showing up 8 times! Any suggestions?

Is your iPhone set to shoot the photos in the High Efficiency format? (Settings > Camera > Formats)?

And are you downloading the photos as JPEG and not High Efficiency HEIF? Then your photos will always be appear as new photos, because you are not importing the originals from the iPhone but converted versions.

With these settings you have to select the new photos manually or to delete the imported photos from the iPhone after importing them to the Mac, so they will not appear again as new photos. Or change the settings on the iPhone, so that the you import the photos to your Mac without conversion.

Another possible reason could be iCloud Photos or My Photo Stream. Do not import new photos without selecting them manually, if you are using My Photo Stream or iCloud Photos. The synced photos cannot be recognised as duplicates of the photos you are trying to import.
