Cannot Verify Server Identity: version.taxcut.com

After upgrading to iOS 14 a few days ago, I am seeing this error message multiple times per day, usually right after unlocking my device:

Cannot Verify Server Identity
The identity of "version.taxcut.com"
cannot be verified. Review the
certificate details to continue.

I've tried quitting all apps and clearing safari's history with no effect.

I don't have taxcut installed on my phone, nor any other H&R Block software, so I assume this is some type of ad being retrieved. The certificate is an Akamai certificate, whose SAN doesn't match version.taxcut.com (only a few akamai domains).

How do I get this to stop popping up or at least trace which app is causing this so I can delete it? I have no intention of accepting an invalid certificate.

I think I've managed to track this down (thanks to using a proxy on my network). At some point in time I had subscribed to the Taxcut calendar (probably as part of using Taxcut) and the Apple Calendar app on my iPhone (which I do not use) was checking it a few times a day. Apparently the certificate (which is tied to SAN's for Akamai and not version.taxcut.com) is not accepted by iOS 14, and that makes sense. Likely a misconfiguration on Akamai or H&R Block's end.

Solution: unsubscribe from (or delete) the Taxcut calendar from your Apple Calendar app (not Google Calendar).

I do not remember subscribing to this calendar.

I expect it was done when running tax software on my Mac and it added to iCloud.

How to Delete H&RBlock At Home Calendar

  1. Select the Calendar app icon
  2. At bottom of screen, select Calendars
  3. Scroll down under Verify Account Information
  4. Press Info button to right of H&RBlock At Home
  5. Scroll to bottom, press Delete Calendar

Here’s a much better way.

iOS 13 or earlier: Go to Settings/Passwords & Accounts, scroll down to Subscribed Calendars, tap on the Taxcut calendar and delete it.

iOS 14: Go to Settings/Calendars/Accounts, scroll down to Subscribed Calendars, tap on the Taxcut calendar and delete it.

This actually remove the calendar, rather than just hiding it.
