Accountsd Mac cpu is high

accountsd process is eating 500% cpu and making macbook pro 15,1 useless after Catalina 10.15.7 update.

Even if you force this process to quit it comes back at ~500% CPU and make lots os apps to hang.

I have tried to disable iCloud Mail integration and other suggestions related to "accountsd" that fixed this issue in previous Catalina versions but nothing worked.

Any suggestions?

I solved it installing this update:

http://support.apple.com/kb/DL2052?viewlocale=en_US

It was impossible to use my MBP 16 ... difficult to download that using safari either (I had to use chrome)

Sorry, try this:

https://support.apple.com/kb/DL2052?locale=es_ES

(If it doesn't work, Use the link that "cavemees" posted some replies before...I used that: Download macOS Catalina 10.15.7 Combo Update)

I tried the logout of the accounts and other stuff..but the only thing that solved it was that update (and I wasn't very confident because I thought that it was the same update that I installed early that afternoon...but it worked)

Got the exact same issue with accountsd using very high CPU making my whole MacBook Late 2013 unresponsive on 10.15.7.

I tried a few things suggested in the forum as:

  • Restarting in Safe Mode
  • Deactivating my Emails Accounts
  • Logging out from iCloud and logging back in again all with no success

What solved my issue ultimately was to turn my wifi off (Click Wifi icon top right, than 'Turn Wi-Fi Off') and turned it back on right after.

I let the Activity Monitor running while doing this and the effect was immediate

I tested it with a normal restart and two days later everything is still running smooth.

You may have a try as this is quick test and may or may not work for your case, hope it can help.

I'm not sure if anyone else is reading this thread other than the poor people involved with this painful issue, which is not new by the way! Questions about this problem in earlier versions of this amazing OS are not hard to find.

It's probably best to send feedback with the type of bug report. https://www.apple.com/feedback/macos.html

Maybe in this case they will notice that something amazing is happening downstairs.

Log out of Apple ID helps but is by no means a durable solution (at least for me) 24h after I logged in (I actually removed my account) the fans where back up. And 500% of CPU usage.

We did the trick for me at least was removing The contents of [User}/Library/Accounts

in my specific situation: Account4.sqlite, Accounts4.sqlite-shm, Accounts4.sqlite-wal

then all reverted back to normal

I chatted with Apple Support and they told me to do the following:

  1. disable all the apps linked with my email accounts from System Preferences > Internet Accounts
  2. perform a NVRAM/PRAM reset
  3. enable the linked apps again

The image below shows the apps that can be enabled for each email account. For example here you see the Mail app enabled for my Exchange email.

I was like "yeah, for sure such a common troubleshooting suggestion like the NVRAM reset will work..."

Guess what? It worked.

Now I am signed in with my Apple ID and my Mac is not taking off anymore. I will report here if the problem comes back after some time.

So I finally figured out the issue.

Mail is sending some data to iCloud. If you notice with your Documents and Desktop folders, Catalina makes it so saving to iCloud is a default. The same goes for Mail settings.

  1. Settings>Apple ID>iCloud Drive (Options>
  2. Uncheck Desktop and Documents folders.
  3. Uncheck Mail

Not only is Mail working as it should, accountsd is using substantially less CPU %.

Anyway, this is what worked for me for now.

  1. Ir a ~ /  Library y borrar la carpeta Mail
  2. Ir a ~ /  Library / Containers / y borrar com.apple.mail
  3. Reiniciar el Mac
  4. Listo.

Gracias.

I am running Catalina 10.15.7 on a 15" MBP 2017. Same issue here with "accountsd". CPU between 300 - 500

What I recognize is, serious issues with Spotlight seems one of the bugs. It does not run well.

I signed out of the Apple ID. Rebooted the mac and it seems fine. As soon as I logged in to my apple id again, the accountsd startet to work again on 300 - 500% CPU.

Following steps have been done:

  • Did Onyx (optimizing) twice, no changes. Including building new Spotlight-Index.
  • Removed all mail / calendar accounts (which I am not using anyways since we're using outlook in the company)
  • Installed the 10.15.7 Combo Update - No changes
  • Removing / Disable iCloud Keychain; No changes

I have no clue how to fix that issue. I desperately need my MBP to work properly. Does someone have an advice for me that may helps? I am not an IT engineer. That's why I am using Mac since almost 15 years. C'mon apple, wtf is wrong with you?! fix that bug!

I'm having the same problem! seems that if you create another user session you can work it out in the meantime. The problem is that I need all the files on my main session.

Please help! I've tried many of the methods here and not working:

  • restarting keychain
  • deleting icould keychain
  • restarting by pressing alt + CMD + P + R
  • running both diagnostics on Activity Monitor
  • Running Disk Utility

Nothing...
