Accountsd Mac cpu is high

accountsd process is eating 500% cpu and making macbook pro 15,1 useless after Catalina 10.15.7 update.

Even if you force this process to quit it comes back at ~500% CPU and make lots os apps to hang.

I have tried to disable iCloud Mail integration and other suggestions related to "accountsd" that fixed this issue in previous Catalina versions but nothing worked.

Any suggestions?

OK, so this worked for me.

  1. Go to "~/Library/Accounts"
  2. Rename Accounts4.sqlite to Accounts4.sqlite.backup

CPU immediately went back to normal. Didn't need to logout out of Apple ID, or restart. Just that file rename did it. Thread here - https://www.reddit.com/r/mac/comments/j05c8e/user_reports_show_that_macos_10157_clogs_up_the/

Same issue here.

Tried iCloud logout/login, but issue reappears again after a few hours.

I found an article that said; mail with an exchange account could be the problem.

especially when a password renew policy is set to renew the password periodically.

I cannot find the article anymore, but this problem was already here last year in catalina?

So, after removing the exchange account and then re-adding the account fixed this issue...for now.

Apple Fix this long lasting issue!!

I had the same problem on my mac mini (late 2012) but my macbook (late 2013) is ok...

(I don't use mail.app, on icloud I only tagged photo synch)

I installed the combo update... same thing after reboot

When I killed the commerce process, effectively accountsd process goes back to normal (20-35%)... but I must kill it at every reboot!

I tried also to remove the sql files !... same problem after reboot

Then I removed the keychain...!

macmin:~ mr$ ls Library/Keychains/

1243C06C-4468-55F2-99F5-52BA47B6FB03 login.keychain metadata.keychain

Microsoft_Intermediate_Certificates login.keychain-db metadata.keychain-db

macmin:~ mr$ sudo rm -rf Library/Keychains/1243C06C-4468-55F2-99F5-52BA47B6FB03

crazy !!!

since two reboots it seems ok now... but for how long?

2 days ago I had this issue and installed the Combo Update mentioned a few times on this post. Today I had again this problem and solved it by doing what you said, closed my Apple ID session, restart holding left shift, login again my Apple ID and then restarting.

Hope this time it stays longer! but Apple needs to fix this ASAP before Macs start burning out all over the world... maybe is what they want so everybody moves to new ARM devices.... like when you iPhone suddenly starts bugging just after a new iPhone is presented to the market

Hi

Brand new iMac 2020 running Catalina!!! Same issue here as I'm typing this (1 Oct 2020). CPU heating to 100 degrees celsius!! I installed the latest Catalina update 10.15.7 and the issue persists. The fans run full speed (hence noisy!) and in order not to fry my expensive iMac I discovered that if I force quit (via activity monitor) the process "commerce" it automatically kills the process "accountsd"....then the %CPU goes to normal values and the CPU temperatures go to normal values <50 degrees celsius. It can happen that the commerce process comes back again depending on what I do (seems related to when I'm signing in to my apple account)....and then I get again the CPUs burning again.

@APPLE: I find this unacceptable! Such an expensive machine becomes good for boiling water! Please solve this ASAP! Thanks! For the rest I'm happy with the iMac but guys I did not buy such an expensive computer to see it fry its own CPUs due to some weird bug!! Please let me know when you have this solved. Thanks!

I have had this same problem with accountsd and commerce using up the CPU, and commerce constantly downloading something since I updated to 10.15.7.

I tried reinstalling the 10.15.7 combo update as suggested below, and this fixed the problem for a couple of days, but then it came back same as before. I don't use iCloud drive (it's disabled), so at least for me I don't think it's related to that as some have suggested.

What I've tried now is to use Little Snitch to block the commerce process from network access. After doing this and restarting the problem with accountsd and commerce has not reappeared for me. While I can't see any immediate other problems this has caused, commerce is supposed to handle App Store transactions etc so it's probably not a good long term solution to keep it away from the net. But at least for me it has worked as a temporary workaround for the problem while I wait for Apple to fix the real problem.

Used Onyx Standard maintenance procedure (everything but rebuilding mail and spotlight index). When logging into iCloud the login process almost hung up (menu freezes for 5 minutes and accountsd went to 500% cpu usage). After 5 more minutes accountsd cpu usage dropped to about 200%, did this for the next 4 hours, then I went to bed an shut down the system. This next day all troubles with Accountsd are gone, Macbook runs like a charm.

  1. Log in into iCloud and uncheck the "Find My" option in its settings.
  2. Use Onyx's Maintenance tasks to clean up the caches and some of the basic applications.

That way you don't lose anything, except a few minutes of running Onyx and rebooting. I have rebooted my iMac several times after this and accountsd behaves nicely again. You could even try and check the "Find My" option again after running Onyx. I left mine off - there's already too much Big Brother happening around the world.
