Using markup to annotate text on the PDF is not actually entering text in the PDF form fields. Apple's Preview is an aging PDF reader, and cannot handle certain types of PDF documents.

Use the free, and current Adobe Acrobat Reader DC which supports contemporary PDF standards. Do not click the Acrobat Pro Trial button.

Preview eventually let me type in the boxes once i had established the T ( for type!) situated along the Mark Up Toolbar-accessed by pressing view. It was a bit of a plodding exercise-but was sufficient for my needs.

If I ever have to handle more form filling using pdf-then of course a £dreaded subscription to Adobe will be necessary.

Thanks for your advice
