The iPad starts automatically syncing the moment I plug it in to the MacBook Pro.
Despite a 1 hour read through all the answers I cannot find a solution.

Connect the ipad
Look in Finder and locate your ipad in the sidebar
Click on it
Click on the General tab in the panel
Uncheck the Automatically Sync box
Click on Apply
You cannot stop the first sync ad far as I know.

Thank you for your helpful reply. It would be good if I could stop the fiirst Sync - cannot understand why it is not available. When I read around it was this that was frustrating every user who posted on Apple and elsewhere about the Sync problem.
I agree, the default should be no sync. I can only assume they are trying to be helpful, same as all iCloud services are turned on by default
