Re-installing OS on MacBook Pro

After I choose to install OS X Yosemite, It asks to chose a disk to install it to but there is no options to choose from? How do I find these options?

That usually means your HDD is dead. Can you open Disk Utility to see if the drive appears in Disk Utility? If so, then you can try formatting it before the installation. If the drive is dead, then it will have to be replaced. If you have an external drive, then you can connect it and use it for the target. Once you boot the computer from the external drive, you can see if the internal drive is still functional. See below for booting from an external drive.


Boot Using OPTION key


  1. Restart the computer.
  2. Immediately, at or before the chime press and hold down the "OPTION" key.
  3. Release the key when the Boot Manager screen appears.
  4. Select the disk icon for the external drive.
  5. Click on the arrow button under the drive icon.
