In reading an article on Apple support about “how to import contacts from a SIM card onto the iPhone” and article explains how to do this, there is a statement at the very end of the article that says the SIM for iPhone stores no contacts. I don’t get it.
Some phones store contacts in the SIM. iOS does not. iOS can import contacts from the SIM, if those exist.

Your iPhone doesn't store contacts on the SIM card. If you want to transfer contacts between iPhones, you can use iCloud to back up or transfer content between devices.

Phones from other manufacturers may store contacts on a sim card. When this sim card is inserted into an iPhone, the iPhone is capable of importing those contacts.
The iPhone itself does not then store anything back onto the sim card. All contacts are stored either on iCloud, or an added email account such as Gmail or Hotmail.
So the article on Apple support is referring to someone importing contacts onto an iPhone from a SIM that was in a non-iOS phone? Sorry just still confusing because I don’t think the article states that. Thanks

Your iPhone doesn't store contacts on the SIM card. and The contact information imported from a SIM card depends on how your previous phone stored information on the SIM card provide more clarity.
This doesn’t make any sense. The article clearly states you can import contacts from a SIM card into the iPhone and then there is a statement at the end that says the SIM holds no contacts.
