Apple Watch 6 - No Vo2 Max data

Hi,

This is my first Apple Watch - Series 6 and it's been a great experience so far. The one thing which is troubling is I am not getting any Vo2 Max data being recorded. This is despite doing a number of Outdoor Walks with an average time of 30 mins for each walk. According to the notes, this should be sufficient to record the Vo2 Max. When I check the Vo2 Max Data Sources, there is nothing listed as a source.

I've ensured that both the Watch and iPhone 11 Pro are running on latest 7.0.1/14.01 updates and both have been restarted, with no avail.

I've seen this reported as an issue on the older Apple Watches.

*EDIT* - I can now see other people reporting the same issue with a similar setup as mine. Quite disappointing that Apple has a major bug like this..

Mine was doing the same thing for MONTHS. I finally figured out that my watch was somehow on “Power Saving Mode and wasn’t recording heart rate during workouts.

I toggled this off under Watch > Workout > Power Saving Mode. No issues since.

I just followed the intsruction/hint above:

“From your iPhone>Watch>Privacy>Reset Fitness Calibration Data>Tap this

you just get a confirmation box that tells you that your metrics will not be as good if you to this.

Tap confirm and do it. You will get nothing else, no confirmation but it is done.”

As my watch did not measure before any data I put manually for 6 month back. Since than my watch measure perfectly....

I got an SE last week and it didn't record VO2 Max despite having done a couple of outdoor walks. The watch didn't appear as a data source either. I first tried these steps, which didn't help:

  • Entered a manual VO2 Max reading (37) a few days back in time.
  • Reset the fitness calibration data
  • Did a 25 minute outdoor walk

The next day I did this:

  • Put my phone in airplane mode and made sure that bluetooth also was off. Normal airplane mode won't disable bluetooth if you have an Apple Watch. I checked on the watch that it was completely cut off from the phone.
  • Did a 25 minute outdoor walk.

And that did it! When the walk was finished I had a VO2 Max reading with the watch as data source!

Today I did another walk, the exact same route, but with my watch fully connected to the phone. After the walk I got a new data point, so it seems to be working as it should.

guess I can add 4 other Apple Watch 6's with this problem. I have tried everything mention on the messages below with no change. MyApple Watch 5 has no problems with Vo2 Max. The other 3 Apple Watch 6 with this problem are people I know locally who have upgraded to an Apple Watch 6. The Apple Watch 6 OS seems to have no effect it goes from 7.4 to 7.1. Two of the other Watch 6's didn't even use the Vo2 Max for months and it never turned on.

It seems to be a bug with the actual hardware. Non of the Watch 6's have a Data Source for Vo2 Max while my Watch 5 has three. And I can't add a Data Source to Vo2 Max but I can add one to other things like running or time.

I will return the Watch 6 in a week if this doesn't work and go back to my Watch 5. Apple has no been very helpful in this is understanding this issue.

I have tried re-calibrating numerous times, but the issue persists.

I have an Apple Watch SE and an iPhone Xs, and I keep both updated regularly. On my last attempt to correct the problem by re-calibrating the watch, I was running watchOS 7.3 and iOS 14.3. This is extremely frustrating. Although I have gone on about two dozen walks or runs of 20 minutes since I bought the watch several months ago, it has only collected data on one occasion. This would be frustrating under any circumstances, but the fact that apple does not appear to have addressed the problem despite hundreds of people reporting the same issue makes me furious.

Mine was recording fine until I had to do a restore to get my gps and other data back in sync.

It stopped recording at that point.

I have got it back working it would seem by resetting the fitness calibration data

From your iPhone>Watch>Privacy>Reset Fitness Calibration Data>Tap this

you just get a confirmation box that tells you that your metrics will not be as good if you to this.

Tap confirm and do it. You will get nothing else, no confirmation but it is done.

The go for a 20 minute run or walk using the workout app at your normal speed on a flat road/path etc

this will re-calibrate the watch.

The next time you do a workout (not this time) it should show your V02 max

That is what worked for me.

The VO2 max reading is a bit finicky. For me it records the readings consistently for several days and then skips for week - even when I don’t the the duration and intensity - and then starts to show again.

It would be help if the watch or health app provides a reason for not recording. Then one can alter the workout or diagnose the issue.

It is quite annoying to see missing readings with no feedback from the watch or health app.

Has anyone had any positive feed back with the problem? It looks to be coming up to a year now of not working. Also seems like Apple are too busy working on marketing their online subscription palates videos. How about focusing on what I spent $1600 on, which you broke when you made changes to the platform. Surly if you can create an Apple MAC chip you can get your engineering to get Vo2 working. Or change the platform back!!! How can you sleep when your products don’t quiet work??? I kind of feel like after speaking with my senior advisor that if I don’t like the fact that the feature doesn’t work. I should move onto a different product??? Kind of makes me feel a little sick to be honest as I have been a loyal customer for a number of years.
