Apple Watch 6 won't swipe up!

I just bought the new Apple Watch 6. Actually I have been using Apple Watch since the very beginning.. Great gadget! But, the swipe up problem persists since series 5 on my Watch. Even now with the newest firmware update it’s here to stay.! Just can’t swipe it up (to turn on/off airplane mode)! Any ideas?

Did you enable display zoom (in accessibility settings) on your iPhone or Apple Watch?

I had the three-finger-gesture display zoom active for ages on my iPhone. This was synched to the Apple Watch but I did not notice at all.

Beginning with watchOS 7, I regularly had to reboot my watch until I found out that turning off the display zoom in the Watch app seems to fix the swipes for notifications and control center.

Dear Apple support:

This problem is so frequently asked that I find it inappropriate to just suggest force restarts, updates or re-pairing the watch. You should have noticed by yourself that this does not solve the problem permanently.

With the recent update of WatchOS 7.3, this problems seems now fixed.

What I'd found was that the zoom feature is easily triggered accidentally - a two-finder tap-like touch of the screen will do. If the zoom mode is presently set to a significant magnification, this is easily visible and easily reversed (by another double tap). However, if you double-tap-slide up/down, you can change the magnification and if you change it to just above 100% (practically no zoom), then you might not notice it - but the control center is now inaccessible. (I've never had an issue with the notification center, strangely.)

In the latest update, you can swipe up/down for the control/notification centers to appear even when zoomed and it all now works properly. At least, I have not seen a recurrence of this issue since the update a few days ago.

Just adding my voice to the choir. I have noticed swipe being disabled only happens on the home screen for me. If I press the crown, I can move around the screen nicely. I don't know about anyone else, but I have also been frustrated that even though I cannot intentionally swipe my screen, I will look at my watch and the face will have changed. Again. How is that happening if I cannot swipe on my screen. I did see that zoom had been turned on. I have disabled that and will see what that bears out.

I also have the same issue. It happens when trying to swipe down as well. I have to restart the watch or take it off and put it back on and enter the unlocking code. Very frustrating.

called Apple support and the direction given was the following

1- try to unpair and pair again: did not solve the issue

2- unpair and pair but also start the watch as new not from a backup: did not solve the issue

3- swap the watch, I did and tried the two suggestions above with the new watch: did not solve the issue

I have the stainless steel graphite 44mm and on the Apple Watch app on the phone it shows as a 44mm aluminum case.

not sure why this issue is happening.

I have never written to/about an Apple product since I first started using them decades ago... BUT this has now changed.

My new Apple Watch 6 (s/s 40mm) arrived home 2 days ago [replacing my old - and trusty - 5yo Watch 1] with my two most desired features (waterproof and always-on). After setup, I was quite pleased with the new arrival and it seemed that all features - including cellular connection - were firing on all cylinders... until yesterday morning - swipe up (utilities & control) and swipe down (notifications) had ceased to function on this 24hr-old device.

As I believed I may have set a parameter incorrectly, I went through the entire reset-reload and restart procedures only to have the inability-to-swipe-up/down issue recur.

Then I read these Communities posts and discovered 'we are not alone'... my 48hr-old wrist-brick is in the same state as far too many others... and, APPLE Inc, you are not responding well to this growing Community's concerns. For info, I have performed all the processes recommended above (remove Zoom from iPhone and Watch 6, reset Watch 6 to factory settings, etc.) with no positive swipe up or down outcome.

As I no longer have a go-back option (Watch 1 was gifted to another), I will, like many others, endure the wait while you decide when this Watch line feature will be rendered available again.... but I am disappointed that APPLE has known about this (since at least Fall 2020) and chosen to provide mis-information to customers seeking resolution of this failure in the product line rather than resolving the issue and advising Watch 6 purchasers accordingly.

Please act professionally... fix Watch 6 swipe functions and communicate with customers.

Thank you. I have tried everything, but it is nice to know I’m not the only one. I’ve been given the same response by support ... you’re the first person to report this. Now I know it’s NOT true. There is definitely something wrong with Apple. I bought the new watch because Siri and dictation weren’t working on my old one and I was told it needed repair at a cost so I decided to buy the new one. Well... with a new update, the old one works fine now and the new one doesn’t. Apple refuses to take back the new watch because it’s past the month for returns. If they know this is a problem, they should be providing customers a free return and full credit!!! ... especially if misinformed on problem with old watch. I do not like this kind of customer service when spending so much on products now. I have disable zoom so will see if that works. Why do consumers know more about how to fix problems than App,e Support??
