Preview is not seeing my iPhone or iPad as a scanner anymore?

I really like being able to scan a document in Preview. Something changed and my Mac isn't seeing my iOS devices anymore and they are greyed out on the "import from" list. What is the key to this connection so that I can trouble shoot it? Is it Bluetooth? Is it Apple ID? Or some combination? Thanks for any suggestions.

Hello CWurts,

Thank you for reaching out in Apple Support Communities. We understand the option to select your iPhone to scan a document in Preview is grayed out. We'll be happy to help.

We suggest making sure that you have the Wi-Fi and the Bluetooth features turned on for both the iPhone and the Mac. From there, see if you can select your iPhone to scan a document in Preview.

Now, if both of these features are already turned on, we suggest to temporarily turn it off and restart both the iPhone and the Mac. Then turn the Wi-Fi and Bluetooth features back on and see if that helps.

If needed, here's two articles with more information: Import images from a camera into Preview on Mac and Insert photos and scans with Continuity Camera on Mac

Kind regards.

Thank you for the reminder of the simple things. Although I did restart both devices after an update and logging in to both of my Apple IDs this systematic approach brought the iPhone back into contact with the MacBook for the scanning feature. I suspect that the fact that I have two apple IDs, which are a vestige of ancient history as an Apple customer, that was a significant part of the problem. I would love to merge the two IDs, but I have not figured out how to that without loosing a significant amount of music. Thank you again!
