Upgrading MacBookPro from High Sierra

I have a MacBookPro that I bought refurbished a few years ago, mid-2010, running High Sierra 10.13.6. It needs to be upgraded. I see some higher operating systems for sale, but I'm concerned about purchasing and trying to install it, having it unsuccessful, and not getting my money back. Any suggestions? Thanks!

Mac operating systems since around 2013 are free. However a 2010 MacBook Pro cannot upgrade to any operating system after High Sierra. The systems after High Sierra will only run on a 2012 or later MacBook Pro.
