It happens no matter what I’m taking a screen shot of. It is still dark when the recipient receives it. I turned auto brightness off and still dark.

Hello, Kmctrinity!

Thanks for reaching out to the Apple Support Communities! It sounds like you have an issue with your screenshots being too dark. Do you have the same issue when you disable auto-brightness? Check out this article to Adjust the brightness on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch:

"About brightness levels

iOS devices use an ambient light sensor to adjust brightness levels based on the light conditions around you. The sensor lowers brightness in dark locations and raises brightness in light locations. The auto-brightness feature is on by default.

When auto-brightness is on, you'll notice that the brightness slider on your device moves according to changing light conditions.

You can turn auto-brightness on or off in Settings > Accessibility > Display & Text Size."

Once you have disabled auto-brightness, Restart your iPhone and test it again.

  • Does this happen with other pictures you take with your device or only with screenshots?
  • When you send the screenshots to someone, do they appear to be dark for them as well?
  • Does this happen with screenshots on all apps or a specific app?

We look forward to hearing back from you and take care!

The temporary solution is to turn off HDR: Settings>Camera>Record Video>HDR (turn off).

It is interesting to note that when you upload a video to Facebook or Instagram that was recorded in HDR, it will appear much brighter than what you see on your iPhone. Developer apps are still way behind the HDR technology. Only use HDR when you are sharing between devices that have the compatible technology (iPhone to iPhone).

Apple SW developers need to find a way to fix this screen capture issue in the HDR mode. My wife was greatly disappointed in the upgrade to iPhone 12 Pro, for this very reason. At least now, she has a temporary solution.
