can't add date on apple watch face

I updated my watch a few days ago and now I can't get my watch face to show the date. I've been through the steps shown online and the date is not an option under "complications." I've been through the steps to try and add a complication, but it suggests clicking the green + button, which my watch app (on my phone) doesn't have.
