New Macbook Air switches connection from wi-fi to peer-to-peer during migration.

Older iMac and new Macbook Air are both on wi-fi network and migration process begins as expected. Both indicate their connections are on the same wi-fi network. Then the migration seems to stall and the new Macbook connection profile indicates "peer-to-peer". The older iMac still shows connection as being wi-fi. What's happening and how do I fix it?

Hello Carla Marshall-Waggett,

It sounds like you aren't able to properly set up your new MacBook Air using Wi-Fi.

Depending on the size of your content that you're transferring from your old iMac , it can take several hours or more to complete. If you're seeing the process stalling/slowing down, then you can try connecting the two devices using Ethernet, then restarting the process.

Additionally, check for updates to macOS, and consider using Time Machine to transfer data. You can see those suggestions in the following article: How to move your content to a new Mac - Apple Support

Regards.
