How do you change the appearance of your downloads from your dock?

Hello! I accidentally somehow deleted my downloads folder from my dock. When I put it back on the dock, it started to open in this big box rather than the small, filed line like normal. How do I get it back to normal? This takes up so much space and can be really annoying.
