Macbook Pro medio 2012 suddenly very slow

Sounds like your HD is failing, or in a state of failing. If this the OEM mechanical HD that shipped new with your mid-2012

HD you can expect to fail typically 3-5 years

Now is your chance to upgrade to a SSD. Highly recommende you chane the SATA cable at the same time.

Yes it is very possible.

if you pull that SSD and put it into an external enclosure—boot external, this will test thee SSD and bypass the the internal SATA cable. A definitive test.
