mac contacts will not sync to icloud

iCloud sync of everything used to be fine. Now, contacts FROM my mac will not sync TO iCloud. iPhone and iPad both work fine both ways. And everything that gets to iCloud (from iPhone, iPad, or manually added at iCloud.com) syncs back to my mac. Just nothing from mac to iCloud. Have signed out of iCloud on all devices, turned sync of contacts on and off, deleted contacts from mac, multiple times. No luck. And it's just contacts, reminders, calendar, etc all sync fine. Help.
