New Wake Alarm Setting Protocol (Bad)

Having to open the Health app to edit alarm settings, instead of adjusting the alarm directly in the Clock app, like in previous iOS versions, is non-intuitive, and can be very confusing to customers. Currently, when you want to change your wake up alarm time in the Clock app, you can only change it for one day, and then you have to select ‘Edit Sleep Schedule’ to go to the Health app and change the alarm time for all days; just not intuitive, and not Apple-like. I went on the Apple Feedback site to suggest that Apple consider putting all the alarm editing back in the Clock app. The Sleep data can still display in the ‘Sleep’ section of the Health app. I understand the logic of sleep and wake times being related to health, so having the DATA in the Health app makes sense, but moving the alarm settings from the Clock app to the Health app does not make sense. Thoughts?

No, you do not have to use the Sleep Schedule to use the native iOS Alarm. Just open the Clock app, tall the Alarm icon at the bottom of the screen and set whatever apps you want. I do it regularly. You can also set alarms with Siri.

Sorry about what you have gone through. Here is a fix I figured out on my phone:

First turn off that deplorable, intrusive, unhealthy health system by going into the health widget and click off that green button.

Second, find the clock widget and tap on it. There should be four choices at the bottom pick ‘alarm’.

Third, click on the plus symbol on the top right corner. “+” . This should bring you back to your old alarm system and also any of your own recorded alarm music.

Should fix it. But test it and make sure it works before you rely on it.

Good luck and be well!

No dear Idriss,
Thats the point. I already chose when I thought I was buying this phone and it’s features. So I dont get to choose, unless you mean buying another clock app, where I already payed for one.

You don't have to buy a new Clock app. There is a perfectly good basic alarm feature in the installed Clock app. You don't need to use Health if you don't want to. However, if you buy an iPhone and expect that its features will never change, you are doomed to disappointment. Technology is evolving.

There is absolutely no doubt Apple made a mistake changing this feature without inquiring about their clients opinion.
worse: they insist on explaining WHY they are RIGHT better than understanding the issue and solving it in a new version

And that is how Apple has always done things. They work on the assumption that they know better than you what you need. It's gotten a little better since the death of Mr. Jobs as most of that flowed from him. But, it's still the way they work.

Apple used to be famous for its intuitive features versus Android
this “invention” is totally inappropriate
it does not answer to any client expectation

Yes, it does. Since the Apple Watch came out, people have been clamoring for it to support sleep tracking.

It is IMPOSED to millions that spend big bucks to have a SMART phone
please APPLE, accept this error, go back to the very convenient previous version, forget your PRIDE and solve the problem
you had the best ergonomy and design
with this foolish counterintuitive design you are worse than ANDROID
Stop explaining to you clients YOU ARE RIGHT
Just listen to them
thank you
(and tell the guy he had this idea of “improvement, that was a crazy one! 😏)

And, for the I don't know how many-eth time, the basic alarm function in the Clock app has barely changed in at least a decade. You can still set an alarm through the Clock app that is unrelated to Health or sleep tracking.

The above reply from Level 10 is not up to date in the attached like. New clock at the top of the page in Alarm takes you to Health setup. Is their anyway to delete this relationship? For many reasons it does not fit my life style.

Yes, it is up-to-date. I just tested it. If you open the Clock app, tap the "Alarm" icon at the bottom of the screen, and then tap the "+" in upper right corner, you will be able to set up an alarm that is not linked in any way to sleep tracking (which I use) and yes, it works just fine.

For those posting that the clock hasn’t change, they clearly haven’t used it regularly prior to the uninvited changes recently.

The alarm was part of all other clock functions with a quick tumbler to change wakes - that is all gone and replaced by a Microsoft styled typed time.

Okay, that was a change across the board. It's the same in the calendar app. Personally, I think this makes everything easier to use. Nice big keypad rather than fussy tumblers that were too easy to spin past where I wanted. However, different people have different tastes.

was luck not to delete my current clock settings when this downgrade happened and have been able to avoid the creepy health data app.

You still don't have to use Health or sleep tracking.

I don’t think this message board is of any use. Apple is not listening and periodically has its shill post how great the new changes are when not.

No, Apple isn't reading here. This is a user-to-user technical support forum. Apple has a dedicated feedback page:

Just enter the feedback under iPhone as it's all part of the iOS.

it is an issue of choice and listening to end users. Apple does not provide choices or listen to end users anymore. Just bought a old fashioned alarm clock and will look for an alternative app in the future.

I guess you haven't used Apple products for very long. They have never been big on providing choice or soliciting design advice from customers. Their philosophy has always been "We know what you need better than you do". If anything, they've actually gotten a bit more inclined to give choices since Mr. Jobs died.

You cannot go back. At the moment, your options are either learn to live with it or download one of the many hundreds of alarm apps available in the App Store.

I need to answer twenty questions on how I want to sleep, what my goals are?

MY GOAL IS TO HAVE AN ALARM GO OFF AT 7:30!!! Can you handle that??

You don't have to use Health to set an alarm. You can just use the Alarm tab in the clock tab the same way it's been since iOS ..... 5? You can also tell Siri when you'd like an alarm to go off. That, in my opinion, is even easier. You only need to use Health if you want to use the sleep tracking features.

if there is no solution to this I need to get an android phone. I am never using health and need an alarm. It is Saturday evening and I am stuck without an alarm all weekend. I will just trade this in for a Samsung on Monday.

So why don't you just use the regular alarm that is available on the phone? It doesn't require that you use Health at all.

Why don't you try using the regular alarms? You don't have to use the sleep tracking. You can also use both. I use the sleep tracking alarm for my regular alarm but also make use of the standard alarms when they are more appropriate.

I came home after an exhausting day at work, & only have enough time to eat dinner, go to bed, & be up extremely early. I go to set my alarm & I’m rerouted to Health & FORCED (let’s call it as it is, shall we? Users aren’t given the option of whether we want to use this app or not. That sounds forced to me) to enter a ridiculous amount of personal information, just so we can set our regular alarms! I tried to turn it off, & received a notice that if I turn it off, my wake up alarm will not go off. THAT, is absolute BS. Smart phones are supposed to make our lives simpler, & that is certainly not the case with this app. The amount of information that we have to input is ludicrous. It was FINE the way it was; the clock app was user friendly, quick & easy. This nonsense is nothing but a tedious, intrusive, & infuriating hassle. Who’s idea was this? Please go back to the way it was Apple!

You are absolutely NOT required to use sleep tracking or the Health app. Open the Clock app. Tap "Alarm" at the bottom of the screen and set whatever alarm you want without giving any personal information. In other words, exactly the way the alarm has worked since at least the iPhone 4.

Yes, you now have to use a numeric keypad instead of the scrollers to select the time. But, if you find that too onerous, just tell Siri to se the alarm for you.

Jan 28, 2021 6:15 AM in response to whydavewhy

They ruined it. HATE IT! Yet again, they’ve over engineered and diddled with something that didn’t require any improvements! They need to focus on fixing the issues involved in texting/ typing/ scrolling, before they go and fiddle around with the clock. Why they thought this new 24 hour clock face was a good idea, just frustrates me to no end. I used to use the clock to estimate time, I found it useful for calculating driving time, work hours, and visually seeing/ estimating hours in general, not just for bedtime. Although you can still use it in this way, it no longer looks like an actual clock, which decreases your productivity, because you no longer can visualize the hours in the same way you would by looking at a clock. Not to mention having to mess with health and all that. It now requires higher level thought processes just to set a bedtime, and the whole process has been made overly complicated, feeling more clunky/over designed, less user friendly/ intuitive. I really loved the old version, and I’m beginning to feel more & more disgruntled by the unnecessary changes they are continually making. They are making things less efficient, and adding more steps to processes that should be simple, familiar, easy to access and dependable. It should not feel like a puzzle every time you are trying to set an alarm, when most often times you are already tired when you are trying to set it! Atleast give us the **** option to access the old version of things, don’t force us to use the new crap just because you spent money paying someone to redesign something. I suggest everyone that has this issue follow the link (provided in this thread somewhere) and submit their insights to apple! I certainly did!
