Compound Clips from year old project broken with 10.4.7 update, problem continuing in 10.4.9

Hi all,

I have a year old project that my client requested an update for. I had recently updated FCP to 10.4.7. My OS is now Catalina 10.15.7, and while troubleshooting today, I updated FCP to 10.4.9. All other OS updates (including the pro video update) are current as of today.

After the 10.4.7 FCP update, all of the compound clips in the project timeline are dead. They are greyed out. Double clicking them doesn't do anything. I can move them and I can disable them (V), but that's it. The INFO panel is blank when I select a Compound Clip, and if I try to select a different group of metadata info while the compound clip is selected, FCP crashes every time . I CAN open those Compound Clips that are in the browser, but not the timeline. I looked for any third party filters or effects in the compound clips. Nada.

Any thoughts?

It looks like that project and probably the library are really messed up.

I’d start by trying to open a backup of the library. Maybe if you select a backup from before the update to 10.4.7 it will update correctly now to 10.4.10.

Other things one could try, in no particular order:

  • export xml of the project, and import to a brand new library
  • select all in the project, copy, new project, paste.
  • select a non working compound, Shift F, drag the compound from the browser over the one in the timeline, replace; if it works, repeat for the others

WOAH.... I DID update to 10.4.10 today... (I just didn't notice it was 10.4.10. Why didn't i notice? Because the About FCP still shows 10.4.9, even though the APP store says I successfully updated to 10.4.10... yikes. Here is the App store showing the update to .10.... but the About FCP showing 10.4.9. CLEARLY the update to .10 worked because I see the differences in the FCP interface after updating.

The computer is not shutting down and FCP shows no sign of problems before it crashes. (No spinning beachball, no pauses or other issues). EVERY time FCP crashes today(probably about 20 times while troubleshooting this issue), it simply vanishes and I get the "Do you want to report this to Apple" thing.

Dang, you got me hopeful it would be a simple fix. I checked the timeline index. The Compound clips are not listed in the timeline index at all. So I selected a CClip in the timeline and tried to assign a video role to it and FCP crashed. I looked at the crash log and it specified a Kernel crash, wrong address.

Also note that FCP is being VERY problematic with relinking files. Initially when I launched this project, none of the files could be found (even though all of the files are stored internally in the project file itself.). So this led to a discovery that there is no way to relink files that are stored internally. As such, I copied (not moved) all assets out of the project file to the finder and tried to relink again. FCP let me link to all of the files in the finder, but when I click the final Link button (to relink) I get an error that the files cannot be linked because they are the wrong length. (Even though they ARE the exactly the same as the original files stored in the project file).

So in addition to dead compound clips, I have yellow flags all over the project. NOTE that I don't have a single occurrence of the red MISSING screen anywhere in the project.

I have pitched preferences, rebooted computer, etc.

Hi Al, no I haven't. Can you clarify... are you asking (Clean my Mac) if I did because it can screw things up? or are you asking as advice that I try it?

I am not Al, but I answer that: it CAN screw things up, or rather it DOES screw things up.

Don't ever let cleanmymac anywhere near your mac.

Also, do not install third party "antivirus", or any other program that claims to "clean", "speed up", "optimize" your mac.
