Can't backup using Time Machine

Upgraded my MacBook Pro, and can't backup my laptop, using Time Machine!!! Have an external HD attached via USB, and it keeps saying "Back up disk not available!" Have formatted HD. After the backup starts, it has said that a number of times I've attempted to backup!!!

Time Machine has stopped backing up my Macbook Air. Hello. I cannot backup my Macbook Air on Time Machine. It sticks on 'preparing backup' The last backup was a couple of months ago and I had no problems with it at the time. I have recently backed up another mac onto the external drive I'm using with no problems. It's an old machine, 13" 2015 OS 10.14.6

Time machine no longer backing up I have upgraded my MacBook Pro with Intel silicon (2016 15") through the last two iOS versions and lost time machine backups. I did see an added hard disk volume that I recall was possibly the culprit. On Monterey now, latest this PC can use. My job requires consistent backups, but I cannot do it. I want a new laptop, but need to get this one backed up. Thanks for any suggestions! Ed

Is the external device formatted as GUID/GPT partitioned with HFS+ file system? That’d be what’s expected.
