Apple advises if storing MacBook for 6 months or more to put charge level at 50% for storage. Does that mean I shouldn't just leave it plugged in on my desk fort 6 months? I never take it anywhere.

When using my Mac I leave it plugged in whenever convenient to do so. Your computer and battery will not be damaged. leaving it plugged in reduces the rate of accumulation of battery cycles.
If I was storing the computer I would follow Apple's advice about 50% charge.

I have a MacBook Pro that I never get an opportunity to disconnect and take it off the desk. I have a MacBook Air for that. The MacBook Pro remains plugged in for months (4 years actually) and I have not experienced any adverse effects. One thing to note and that is that I am using that computer for at least 4 hours on most days.
