What does this mean? At the top left of a contact via texting there will be a number and an arrow, such as:

Good Question. Your image shows that you are active with Messaging and see that BACK ARROW and a NUMBER at the top left. That indicates that if you were to tap on that BACK ARROW and get back to the Messages app home screen then you will see 21 NEW MESSAGES from your other contacts.
