How to connect eGPU with XFX RX 5700 XT Triple Dissipation 8GB GDDR6 3xDP HDMI Graphics Card to LG UltraFine 4K display on MacBook Pro 16"
- Connect the MacBook 16" to the eGPU with a Thunderbolt 3 cable
- Reset the SMC https://support.apple.com/en-gb/HT201295
- Use an ALOGIC USB-C to DisplayPort Cable (bidirectional) and connect the USB-C connector to the Thunderbolt 3 Port on the LG UltraFine 4K display first
- Then connect the DisplayPort connector to the top most DisplayPort port on the graphics card in the eGPU (experiment with the other DisplayPort ports if that does not work)
Notes: the order of connecting the cables makes a difference. You may want to connect the devices while they are powered on. If you have connected all devices as described above and the MacBook Pro 16" won't get past the login screen, disconnect only the Thunderbolt 3 cable (from the MacBook Pro 16" only) that goes to the eGPU and reboot the MacBook Pro 16" and/or reset the SMC. Then connect the Thunderbolt 3 cable again while past the login screen. Again, using the right DisplayPort port on the graphics card made a difference as well. I did not get the LG UltraFine 4K Display to recognize the signal from the eGPU while using the USB-C ports on the display. The eGPU is a Razor Core X with an XFX RX 5700 XT card. Don't forget to do a Get Info on the Apps (find them using "Show in Finder") you want to accelerate and check "Prefer External GPU".
