Recycling an old iPad

I bought and set up a 2019 version iPad Air (3rd generation) this summer.  My iPad2 is now redundant and will be recycled.  I want to get rid of all data on the iPad2 and presumably this is done via the Factory reset option.  Is that correct?

I changed my Apple ID on my iMac and new iPad Air quite recently but the iPad2 still has the old Apple ID on it as I haven’t used it since March.   Will I have to update the Apple ID on my iPad2 before erasing the data? Would the iPad2 need to be connected to Wi-Fi in order to update the Apple ID?  I would prefer not to connect it to Wi-Fi if possible as there has been a security breach on this device in the past.  Thanks

If you know that you are going to be recycling it and someone else isn't going to be using it, you can restore it without even removing the Apple ID or signing into the Apple ID to change it at all. It will be activation locked, but if nobody is going to use it then that won't be a problem for anyone. You can also log into your Apple ID if the ID has hasn't changed names, and you can see the list of devices (this can be done on the web so you wouldn't have to log your iPad in) and remove the iPad from the list there and it will also remove the activation lock. That being said, this can be done without connecting the iPad to the WiFi if that is something that you are worried about

Thanks, Giulio. What I should have said in my post was that it was about changing my Apple ID password, not the Apple ID itself. Apologies for the confusion. It looks from the link you sent as though I will have to change the iPad2 to the new password for my Apple ID. Presumably when I sign out of iCloud and the iTunes and App Store it will only delete these from the iPad 2, not from other devices?

Re, in the instructions, "2. Back up your device", why would I need to back up the iPad2 before erasing everything? I'm already using the new iPad.

MyiPad2 has a SIM card but my new iPad Air doesn't. Do I need to contact the mobile phone providers and ask them to deactivate the SIM phone number?

Backup: If not needed, ignore that step.

SIM card (cellular data only): contact your carrier and ask them for deactivating that data plan.

If you know the password for the Apple ID being used on the iPad, then no, you do not need to change it.

Wiping the iPad clean will remove the Apple ID it has, leaving it with no data and no attached Apple ID.

Also, unless someone had physical access to the iPad, there is no way for it to have had a security breach nor would it pose any danger to your other devices connecting it to Wifi.
