Time Machine won't use external drive

I have two external drives set up as backups for MacBook with Time Machine. TM stopped using one of them about a month ago even though it is still designated as a backup disk. Looking for suggestions.

Time Machine is backing up to a non-existent drive! Big Sur v11.2.3 Big Sur 11.2.3 I feel like I keep running into the oddest issues! I have 3 external drives defined as back up drives in Time Machine preferences. Due to this causing challenges a few years ago, I disconnected the 3rd drive, but left it listed in preferences. Time Machine is currently running, and when I opened preferences it reported that the backup was being sent to that 3rd drive, which isn't connected! How? Where is the backup going to? Yes, I know that I can remove the drive from preferences, but that's not the point. The point is - Why is Time Machine backing up to a drive that's not even connected? It should certainly detect that the drive isn't there. And no, the drive cannot be connected any way other through the wire.

macOS Monterey external TimeMachine disk is read only. macOS Monterey external TimeMachine disk is read only. I have 5 TB external Seagate disk I want to use as a TimeMachine backup as well as secondary storage. Once the disks is setup as TimeMachine Disk, the disk is READ ONLY with no dropdown options to change the rights. The weird thing is IF I USE a backup drive from my OLD MacBook Pro, Time Machine on the new MacBook will use that drive as well as providing storage for iTunes, etc.

Not really. Could be the drive.

Are they directly connected to the Mac? I doubt a hub would cause any issues.

I don't know why it would just stop backing up to it. It would make more sense if it kept failing the backups and starting over. That would tend to indicate a problem communicating with the drive.

I'd remove it from TM, erase it, check it with First Aid, then add it back to TM if all checks out.

This worked. Any idea why this happens? It's happened before; erasing and starting over was the cure.
