Apple Pencil 1 not working after ios14 update

I have an Apple Pencil 1 that I have been using with a 2nd generation 12.9" iPad Pro. After updating to iOS14 this pencil will no longer connect to the iPad. I have tried everything. I unpaired the pencil but now it won't show up again when I try to pair. Have restarted both iPad and bluetooth, even done a full restore on my iPad. Plus have tried charging the pencil with a lightening cord and adapter - and changed the tip. All to no avail. Any ideas?

Same problem. I followed guide and went to Settings General About and could see the pencil in there twice.

I went to Bluetooth but it wouldn’t connect. IOs14.2

I charged the pen fully and external to the iPad using the little adapter that most people probably lost.

I shut down and rebooted. Then plugged in pencil went to Bluetooth and it was recognised. Guess just have to kick the device in the pants sometimes to fix things - that is shut down everything and restart. Working now.

Made sure under settings that pencil set to be able to scroll and not just draw.

If you have checked through potential issues using the linked troubleshooting guide, then your Apple Pencil may be displaying symptoms of a dead battery - that will not accept or hold any charge.

Assuming that you do not have any other iPad charging issues - and that the Lightning Port of your iPad is free from debris - whilst the Pencil is plugged-in to the Lightning Port of your iPad, verify that the Pencil is recognised:

Settings > General > About

Scroll to the bottom of the page - and you should find entries for the Pencil (iPadOS13 and earlier - two entries, one each for the physical and Bluetooth connections. IPadOS14 - one entry). Finding these entries suggests that the Pencil electronics are good.

Check the Battery Widget for the charge status of the Pencil. Is it 100%? If not, let it charge; if it is fully charged, disconnect from the iPad.

When disconnected from iPad, does the Pencil disappear from the Battery Widget - or it’s indicated state of charge suddenly fall? If either of these are true, then the Pencil battery is likely to be dead.

The tiny internal Li-ion battery is susceptible to permanent/irreversible damage through being left discharged for long periods. Even some “new” pencils can exhibit signs of failure out-of-the-box if they are “old stock”. It is essential that if you have an Apple Pencil that you charge it regularly - whether used or not - so as to protect the battery from deep-discharge. Do not allow a pencil to remain in low-charge state for any period of time - as the internal battery will fail, rendering the Pencil useless.

If the Pencil Battery has failed, the only remedy is to replace the Pencil. If the battery has failed and your pencil is within its one-year warranty, you should look to having it replaced at an Apple Store.

If you are still unable to resolve the problem, you’ll need to seek assistance directly from Apple - either from the Genius Bar at your local Apple Store, or from the Apple Support Team. You’ll find the Contact Support link at top-right of this page, or, alternatively, you can use the excellent Apple Support App to open a support case:

I hope this information proves to be helpful in both diagnosing and resolving the problem.
