How do I cut photos from an sd card rather than copy and move them to an external drive?

After you copy the image files, you can simply drag from the SD card folder to the trash and empty the trash.

However, personally after I copy the images from the card I put the card back in the camera and format it.

I assumed that copying photo files would degrade them hence the need to ‘cut’ them rather than copy. I have since learned that copying a photo file once will have no effect on the quality of the image.

Copying the file will not affect image quality. However, if you're using a lossy image format (like JPG), opening the file and re-saving it will cause in loss of quality, although arguably not really perceptible unless you do it very frequently to the same file.
