That's not how Family Sharing works. You can add funds to your Apple ID, which should be used first, but you cannot use a separate payment method from the organizer. See Add money to your Apple ID balance - Apple Support.

It is done. Give your son $25. Not sure why it didn't use your credit, but perhaps because it is a subscription item that has to be tied to a payment method.
